Off-the-shelf surrounds are sized for a catalog, not your wall. We measure the firebox, the clearances it requires, and the wall it sits on, then build a face with the proportions the room wants — a mantel at the right height, a surround wide enough to feel grounded instead of thin.
Clearances and materials are not negotiable. We keep combustible material the required distance from the firebox and opening, use the right substrate behind tile or stone, and plan the chase so a future insert or gas log set has somewhere to go.
The finish is where it earns the room: hand-built mantels, paneled overmantels, floating hearths, and built-in cabinets and shelving flanking the firebox so the wall does more than hold a fire.
